The Important Dental Assistant

The dentist has an important job, but the job a dental assistant does is just as significant. He or she is the backbone of the dental office. They can do it all and are trained in every aspect. They can answer phones. They can make appointments. They can take payments. They can maintain charts. The assistants help with surgical procedures and provide routine dental cleanings and care. They are the vital link between the dentist and the patient and the one most likely to be dealing with the patient on a one-to-one basis.

The dental care assistants wear a lot of faces. They have many job duties and are very important. They have an extensive background and training in a variety of positions in case they are needed. Most dental offices have more than one dental assistant on duty to cover the variety of skills that are needed. The dental office may only have one dentist but several personal assistants are needed to cover all of the duties.

The certified assistants training usually takes about a year to complete but many assistants find their best training occurs on the job. If they are fresh out of a dental assistant school, then this on the job training is absolutely vital, as book experience only goes so far.

Healthcare assistants are in great demand. Even though a dental assistant salary isn't comparable to that of a dentist, finding a position as a certified medical technician is almost assured. If you gain the necessary skills, then finding a medical technician job should be quite easy, no matter where you are. You will have the added benefit of knowing that you are helping people take care of their teeth and to have a healthier and better smile. Nothing says better health than a pretty, white smile and healthy gums.

Dental assistant classes are not that tough but do require regular attendance and dedication. If you are interested in becoming an assistant to a dentist, then you can ask a local dentist office to recommend a vocational school that offers the class. He or she may also be able to tell you if they are hiring or if they know of a dental office that is hiring untrained workers and are willing to train a person to that position.
