There are a few things you should know before you decide to check out dental assistants schools. They are not all the same and some are better than others. This is especially true of the certified dental assistants and the dental hygienists. One is not the same as the other so do not make that mistake. Dental assistant training can differ and you want to get the best training possible depending on the career path that you chose to take.

A big trend is for college dental assistant programs to be offered. These are traditional four year colleges that offer dental hygienist and assistant courses. A hygienist is someone who has taken more classes and can assist in oral surgery. They are not surgical technologists so make sure you do not confuse them because you do not want to get through the program and suddenly find out that you have made a mistake. You can, however, get your certification and later go back and take additional courses to get those degrees and become certified surgical techs or hygienists.

One of the plus factors in choosing a vocational school is that most only have class for a few hours each day. This allows the students to still work full time. The dental assistants schools offer morning and evening classes to help work around the student's work schedule. Some schools are now online which allows the student to work at their own pace from home. As far as internship goes, you will still need to do that in person during the dentist's normal operating hours.

You can find financial aid to help offset the cost of tuition and books for the program. You will have to provide your income information and your income tax forms from the previous year. The financial aid officer of the school can help you fill out the forms. Any excess aid can help you make your bills while you are in school. You may not be eligible for federal student aid, such as Pell Grants, if you are attending an online school, so take this into consideration before applying.

No one can make the decision for you on which dental assistants schools are better than others. Dental assistant courses are pretty much the same no matter where you go and you will hopefully wind up walking away from the entire experience as a certified dental assistant.
